Regional Issues Workshop




From April 22-24 in Budapest, IATEFL-Hungary will be conducting a RELO Budapest-funded three-day series of intensive workshops for English language educators from Hungary on the theme of incorporating regional social issues (e.g., the migrant situation, Roma integration, ethnic divisions in the Western Balkans) into the secondary school English language class.
The general goals of the program will be to introduce effective ways of contextualizing language instruction through engaging social issues in order to facilitate language acquisition, to enhance English teachers’ abilities to foster critical thinking in the classroom, and to promote civic engagement amongst their youth, as well as their teachers.
Toward these ends, English language teaching professionals, using examples professionals, using examples from U.S. and European culture, will train upper primary- or secondary-level English language educators from Central and Southeastern Europe to develop lessons and projects that facilitate cross-cultural understanding, promote interethnic and interfaith tolerance, appreciate diversity and multiculturalism, and foster empathy.
We invite you to apply for this program. Applicants should be upper primary or secondary school English teachers in Hungary (incl. RELO and IATEFL-Hungary English language program alumni), professionally active IATEFL-Hungary members, and/or pre- and in-service teacher trainers will also be considered.
Participation is free of charge, including the training, travel costs, meals, and accommodation. Teachers in Hungary will also a receive a 5-credit-point training certificate. Workshops will be offered between 9am and 5 pm. Participants should take part in the whole event and are expected to stay for the evening programs as well.
