for 10th grade students 2014
IATEFL-Hungary is proud to invite all students in grade 10 in the Hungarian school system to participate in an international video competition organized by IATEFL Slovenia.
The students will compete in 4 categories:
A second year students, who are learning English as their first foreign language (6th year of learning) and attend any general secondary school that ends with matura examination, and the European classes
B second year students, who are learning English as their first foreign language (6th year of learning) and attend any 4-year secondary vocational school that ends with vocational matura examination and the second or third year students in a 3-year vocational programme
C second year students who have lived in an English speaking area for more than one year and students in international matura classes
D second year students who are learning English as their second foreign language (second year of learning) and attend any general secondary school that ends with matura examination or a 4-year secondary vocational school that ends with vocational matura examination
The students (in groups of 3 to 5 students) should prepare and record a REPORTAGE (news coverage) in English language on the topic OUR HOMETOWN, in which they need to use ten prescribed words according to the category. They need to be cautious about the prescribed word form of each prescribed word.
The students competing in categories A or C, should use the following ten words: SCINTILLA (n), VERGE (n), FURY (n), LEAP (n/v), FORTUNATE (adj), FRAGILE (adj), DAINTY (adj), GLEAM (v), COPE (v), HASTILY (adv)
The students competing in categories B or D, should use the following ten words: BUNDLE (n), FORTUNE (n), LEAP (n/v), HAVEN (n), BLANK (adj), ROUGH (adj), CURIOUS (adj), SPOT (v), ENRICH (v), ABRUPTLY (adv)
The prescribed length of the recorded report is 4 minutes (without opening and closing credits!!).
The criteria according to which the best groups will be chosen (on school as well as on state level) are the following:
Correct usage of given terms, Creativity/Ingenuity of the used terms, Grammar and vocabulary, Pronunciation and fluency, Informative value of the film, General impression of the film, Technical realization.
Since one of our goals is to make the recordings as useful in class as possible, the students should particularly pay attention to the criterion of the informative value of the film.
DEADLINE: 15th March 2014 (the send date is considered)
Please send the following documents to enter the competition:
- recording on a CD/DVD medium (write the name of the school, the title of the recording and the category on the medium)
- script/text in written form (the prescribed words should be written in bold)
- completed application (see attachment)
- completed declaration (see attachment).
Send all the recordings to the following address IATEFL-Hungary, 1276 Budapest, Pf. 19.
The sent recordings will be viewed and evaluated by a committee consisting of three members of the organisation board for the second year secodary school students' competition. The results will be published in the prescribed time on IATEFL-Hungary webpage (www.iatefl.hu).
The mentoring teachers will receive confirmations for mentorship and the best groups will be awarded.
For the first year, participation in the competition is free.
Please inform the students that their names and the results will be published on IATEFL-Hungary webpage AND that their short films will be published on the webpage and on IATEFL-Hungary Youtube channel on the webpage www.youtube.com. In case they do not consent with the publication, they cannot take part in the competition. By signing the enclosed declaration, which is to be sent together with other documents, they guarantee they have been informed about this and that they agree with the publication.
